3 Ways to Effectively Resolve Family Conflicts

We all go through times when our lives are caught up in family issues and conflicts. No matter how long you avoid them, they always find a way to find you. After all, they reside in our home and dwell between blood relations. At the end of the day, we have to go home or to our family members. They are our safe place, our safe haven. So, instead of avoiding them, here are three ways you can resolve these issues.

Agree to Negotiate

Every time you are in an argument, you may notice that everyone is only focused on proving their point. They are not listening to anyone. All they care about is making the other person believe why they are correct and what makes the other person wrong. When both parties are stubborn, finding a peaceful resolution can be challenging, but it is still achievable – only if everyone focuses on listening and understanding each other as a family.

Try to Listen

Conflicts fire up when people communicate while they are overwhelmed with anger. What happens, then? Misunderstandings arise, and things get worse. So, here’s what you can do instead;

  • Identify if the problem is worth fighting for.
  • Separate the problem from your family member.
  • Don’t discuss until you calm yourself down.
  • Remember that you have to resolve the conflict; it’s not about winning the argument.
  • Know that others are not obliged to agree with you; they may have their own opinions/perceptions.
  • Stay on the topic.
  • Respect their opinion and point of view by listening and understanding.
  • Be clear and reasonable.
  • Don’t listen to answer; listen to understand.
  • Finally, find common grounds.

Resolve it Together, Like a Team

Once you’ve understood both sides of the story in a calm demeanor, come up with several solutions as much as you can. And when it comes to compromising, be willing, at least.

Last but not least, stick to the solution once you’ve found it.
