You may already know that the character Daniel Pallson in the story is a public person, a billionaire, and one of the wealthiest men in the US. As the story precedes, you will encounter a scene where Daniel has won a legal battle and is about to address the world through his podium. He is excited and overwhelmed since the political combat is related to his birthplace, Iceland. Daniel dreamed long ago of building a fishing resort and hotel in Iceland, the greatest in the world. That day, he had taken a step closer to his dream becoming a reality.
With his best intentions, he did what was right for his home country; for its betterment and growth. Otherwise, his people may go through difficult times in the future. And his intentions were simple: utilize the available resources for future prosperity.
Despite his best intentions and good conscience, his people were against the judgment of the legal issue. They protested against it by holding banners that said: DON’T RUIN OUR LAND. ICELAND IS NOT FOR SALE. And as he took a leap of faith and tried to talk to the natives to share his thoughts and plans, they kept booing, cut off his sentences, and threw eggs and tomatoes frantically. The whole ceremony became a fuss, and Daniel had to leave immediately to save himself from utter embarrassment.
What do you suppose he did when he finally found a safe place, away from the eggs and tomatoes? He laughed it off with his companions. That’s right because it’s just another day for him, for a public person. They are not always praised, even for the good work they selflessly do for their people. The same people would insult them and, sometimes, even bash them. If you ponder for a moment, the high profile life is tough.
It takes an emotionally strong personality to face the everyday drama. You’re constantly in the limelight, at the disposal of people you don’t even know personally. What’s more? It comes at the expense of your privacy and freedom.
